Celebrating 200 Years

UMMC has kicked off its bicentennial year. The first hospital in the nation for medical teaching and training, over the last 200 years UMMC has grown to two campuses with a history rich in healing, discovery and teaching.

As the academic flagship of the University of Maryland Medical System, UMMC has a reputation as a medical leader. From the time its doors first opened in 1823, UMMC has pioneered new treatments and historic advancements in patient care. UMMC is known as the birthplace of modern trauma care, the first in the state to have a neonatal intensive care unit and the first to deliver a donor kidney by drone to a transplant patient.

As an anchor institution in West Baltimore, UMMC celebrates 200 years of commitment to our community and beyond, and looks forward to continuing to advance patient care, research and education.
