Son huesos duros y densos que brindan resistencia, estructura y movilidad, como el fémur (del muslo). Un hueso largo tiene una diáfisis y dos extremos.

Asimismo, hay huesos en los dedos de las manos que se clasifican como "huesos largos", aunque sean cortos. Esto se debe a la forma de los huesos y no al tamaño real.

Los huesos largos contienen médula ósea amarilla y médula ósea roja, las cuales producen las células sanguíneas.
