The Aerodigestive Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center combines the specialties of gastroenterology, general surgery and pulmonary medicine in multiple programs, to treat a broad range of diseases in a single, convenient location.

Established in 2004, the Center meets the diverse needs of patients with complex or persistent symptoms requiring further evaluation for accurate diagnosis, treatment and management of GERD, LERD, esophageal motility disorders, hernia, inflammatory bowel disease and other associated aerodigestive disorders. We have expanded our comprehensive list of services so that we can offer a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures aimed at improving the quality of life.

These include:

Heartburn and Dyspepsia Program

This program provides routine care for patients with GERD and peptic ulcer disease and comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with complex upper gastrointestinal disease that have not resolved with lifestyle changes and standard medical therapy.

The Heartburn and Dyspepsia Program provides a variety of diagnostic and treatment approaches for the management of upper gastrointestinal disorders including:

Diagnostic tests performed in the AeroDigestive Center include:

Additional diagnostic and interventional procedures are performed in the state-of-the-art endoscopic suite. In addition to medical management, evaluation for minimally invasive surgery for GERD (Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication) and achalasia (Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy) is also provided in the AeroDigestive Center.

Hernia Program

Using the latest technology, physicians at the Hernia Program are nationally recognized leaders in the research and the pioneering treatments of both routine and complex hernia (inguinal, ventral, incisional) cases. A multidisciplinary approach assures a thorough and comprehensive evaluation, treatment intervention and follow-up care to meet the needs of each patient.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program combines the specialties of gastroenterology and general surgery to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. A specialized focus of the program is improved monitoring of patients through the use of telemedicine systems.

Additionally, the program has an interest in detecting and eliminating adverse drug reactions, a common problem experienced by patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The program also favors a minimally invasive surgical approach to patients failing medical therapy, whenever possible.

Pulmonary Consult

A multidisciplinary team of pulmonologists provide consultations and offer medical management to those patients experiencing chronic cough caused by GERD and other related illnesses, such as sleep disorders, treated through the AeroDigestive Center.
