Anesthesiology emerged as a medical discipline at the University of Maryland Hospital in 1913 with Dr. Griffith Davis, the only physician in Baltimore who practiced anesthesiology full-time. The residency program was established in 1945 with a team of five residents and a single full-time faculty member, Dr. Fred Dye. Since then, the program has grown under the direction of four dynamic chairs -- Dr. Alfred Nelson, Dr. Robert Dodd, Dr. Martin Helrich, Dr. M. Jane Matjasko. In December 2006, Dr. Peter Rock became the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and has committed himself to continuing the tradition of excellence established by his predecessors.
The program has continuing commitment to excellence in patient care, education, research, faculty development and the advancement of the specialty of anesthesiology. In addition to providing services at the University of Maryland Medical Center, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, the Baltimore VA Medical Center and Kernan Hospital, our department also oversees eight divisions: cardiac anesthesia, critical care anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, pain management, pediatric anesthesia, transplant anesthesia and trauma anesthesia.
Our laboratories conduct research in clinical anesthesiology, neurodegeneration and neuroprotection, human factors, telemedicine, and basic respiratory physiology. We also collaborate with researchers at the UMMS Hospital, the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Find out more about our research.
In addition, our department works closely with the Maryland Pain Management Center at Kernan Hospital to manage patients with chronic and acute pain.
