Type 1 used to be called
juvenile
or
insulin-dependent
diabetes.

Type 2 used to be called
adult-onset
or
non-insulin dependent
diabetes.

Diabetes
refers to any type of diabetes involving abnormal levels of glucose in the blood or urine. It includes type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Diabetes insipidus
is a rare, unrelated form of diabetes involving increased urine production, but no glucose abnormality.
