UMMC's Lisa Rowen and Mrianne Rowan-Braun Among "Maryland's Top 100 Women" name by The Daily Record Two exceptional leaders at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) have been named to The Daily Record's list of "Maryland's Top 100 Women" for 2013. Lisa Rowen, D.N.Sc., R.N., Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, and Marianne Rowan-Braun, Vice President and Director of the Campaign for Shock Trauma, were selected by an outside panel of business leaders based on professional accomplishment, community involvement and commitment to mentoring. Having received this honor two previous times, Lisa Rowen now also becomes a "Circle of Excellence" inductee. |

This prestigious awards competition, sponsored by eHealthcare Strategy & Trends, recognized the UMMC Web site with gold awards for Best Health/Healthcare Content, and Best Rich Media, which focuses on video, audio podcasts, virtual tours and multimedia content. UMMC Receives 2012 Trailblazer Award The University of Maryland Medical Center received two awards at the Maryland Hospitals for a Healthy Environment’s (MD H2E) fifth annual Environmental Excellence in Health Care Conference at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, held on November 14, 2012. One is MD H2E's Trailblazer award for a program to educate new mothers on the health risks of pesticides. The other award, from the Integrated Pest Management in Health Care Facilities Project, honors UMMC for using a "green approach" in pest management. |
More than 100 University of Maryland Doctors Selected as Super Doctors® More than 100 University of Maryland Medical Center/School of Medicine doctors were selected by their peers as Super Doctors® in the Washington, DC-Baltimore-Northern Virginia area. Thousands of doctors in our area received Super Doctors surveys last spring asking for nominations in 42 specialties. The Super Doctors research team then evaluated each nominee using a strict set of established indicators, including peer recognition and professional achievement. After the extensive nomination and research process, conducted by Key Professional Media, Inc., the results appeared in Washington, DC-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Super Doctors 2012, a special advertising section in the October 28, 2012 issue of The Washington Post Magazine. |

Record Number of UM Physicians Named Baltimore Magazine "Top Doctors" An all-time high 98 University of Maryland doctors, all members of the UM School of Medicine faculty, were recognized as "Top Doctors" in Baltimore Magazine's November issue. These doctors are listed below by specialty. The results are based on a Baltimore Magazine survey of nearly 10,000 physicians in the Baltimore area, including Baltimore City and the surrounding seven counties, asking where they would send a member of their family in dozens of specialties. The University of Maryland Medical Center has more doctors on the list than any other hospital. |
International Award for SICU Team Approach to Supporting Families A multi-professional team from the Surgical Intensive Care Unit has won the 2013 Family-Centered Care Innovation Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) for developing a plan for ensuring that families of critically ill patients are supported with information, options and resources. |

UMMC Units Honored for Reducing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections Four patient care units at the Medical Center were honored by the Maryland Hospital Association (MHA) on September 18, 2012 for significantly reducing a painful complication that some patients develop -- catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). |

Choiniere was recognized for spearheading environmental initiatives at UMMC, including a hazardous pharmaceutical waste management program, Earth Day events, and a weekly farmers' market. |

In 2010, UMMC began participating in Project SEARCH, an Arc-sponsored program that provides training, education and future employment to Baltimore City Public Schools high-school students with disabilities. UMMC has since hired four of these young adults as full- or part-time staff members after they completed a transitional training program. In recognition of this successful partnership, The Arc joined with the Baltimore Business Journal to honor UMMC with an "Employer of Distinction" award in October 2011, along with two other Baltimore-area employers. The award was created to honor companies that have demonstrated that employing people with developmental disabilities has contributed to their company's success. |

UMMC Wins National Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth Practice Greenhealth, an organization of dedicated to environmentally responsible practices at large health care facilities, awarded UMMC a "Partner for Change, with Distinction, Award." UMMC staff accepted the award in April at the annual global conference, CleanMed2011, in Phoenix, Arizona. The Medical Center has previously won the "Partner for Change Award." This year, the award comes "with distinction" - a higher level that recognizes a greater level of action and results. |

UMMC Wins Two Awards for Environmental Excellence from Practice Greenhealth UMMC was presented with two awards from Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations. The "Partner for Change Award" was presented to the Medical Center in honor of its efforts to reduce waste, eliminate mercury and prevent pollution in a health care environment. The "Making Medicine Mercury-Free Award" was also presented to the Medical Center to recognize its mercury-free management, purchasing policies and recycling programs. |
BMT Nurses Named Best Nursing Team: Receive First Place Award from ADVANCE for Nurses Magazine The Blood and Marrow Transplant team the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center has won first place for Best Nursing Team from ADVANCE for Nurses magazine. The award evaluates nursing teams for initiative, adaptability, expertise and outreach, and is given in conjunction with National Nurses Week, which is observed May 6-12. UMGCC's team is featured on the cover of the magazine's May issue. |

UMMC's Progressive Care Unit Wins Beacon Award from AACN UMMC's Progressive Care Unit has received the prestigious Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). The award recognizes the top intensive care units in the country. The PCU is the first progressive care unit in Maryland to receive this award. To receive the award, intensive care units must meet rigorous criteria for excellence, exhibiting high-quality standards and exceptional care for patients and their families while fostering and sustaining healthy work environments. The units are evaluated on 42 criteria in six categories: patient outcomes; evidence-based practice and research; leadership and organizational ethics; excellence and innovation in recruitment and retention; education, training and mentoring; and promoting healing environments. |

UMMC Breast Center Achieves Center of Excellence Designation The University of Maryland Breast Center has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The designation is awarded to breast-imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR's voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program. |

The award recognizes UMMC for sustaining a level of 75 percent for organ donation, meaning that, of all patients who met the criteria for donating organs, next-of-kin agreed in 75 percent of those cases to authorize donation. |

UMMC Named One of Nation's Top Hospitals by Consumers' Checkbook, AARP Magazine UMMC is listed among the nation's top 125 hospitals, according to a Consumers' Checkbook survey for the May/June 2009 issue of AARP Magazine. Consumers' Checkbook, a non-profit research organization, rated hospitals in the nation's 53 largest metropolitan areas to develop its list. Consumers' Checkbook uses government statistics, surveys of doctors and other forms of research to compare and rank hospitals for the quality of care they provide. Criteria for the survey include doctor recommendations, patient recommendations, whether proper tests and procedures are carried out, complications in major cases, and death rates for high-risk cases. |

UMMC Named a "Top Hospital to Work For" by Nursing Professionals Magazine UMMC was one of 100 hospitals selected as a "Top Hospital to Work For" based on a job satisfaction survey of 25,000 nurses from around the country by Nursing Professionals Magazine. Winning hospitals were recognized for giving nurses a voice in how things are done, being family-friendly employers who offer flexible work schedules and for having a diverse nursing workforce.

UMMC is the only Maryland hospital to receive Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care recognition in four areas: bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers and transplants. The designation is based on rigorous, clinically meaningful measures established in collaboration with expert physicians’ and medical organizations’ recommendations. The goal is to help consumers find healthcare facilities that have demonstrated better overall outcomes in the delivery of specialty care. |
