Research Activities
- National Institutes of Health Center of Excellence for research in complementary
medicine. Focus on traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of arthritis
and related conditions.
- National Institutes of Health International Center for research of traditional
Chinese medicine for functional bowel disorders. In collaboration with the
Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Illinois, the University
of Western Sydney and the Mayo Medical Center.
- Coordinating center for the Complementary Medicine Field of the international
Cochrane Collaboration.
- On-going clinical trials program evaluates the efficacy and scientific foudnation
of complementary medicine and integrative approaches to patient care, including
acupuncture, herbs and mindfulness-based stress reduction.
- Basic science investigations explore the mechanism of action of complementary
therapies such as acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbal medicines.
- Outcomes research collects data from a non-randomized clinic population to
assess efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of particular treatment approaches
or combinations of treatment approaches in a real-life situation.
- Surveys of the attitudes and clinical behaviors of various physician groups
toward complementary therapies.
