The UMMC Cultural Competence Program has four major goals:
Since the Diversity Council and Diversity Facilitator Group were convened in 2002, the Medical Center has focused on identifying and addressing the underlying cultural barriers that may lead to disparate healthcare provision.
As a result, the Diversity Council developed or contributed to several important policies including the Physician Code of Conduct, Domestic Partner Benefits Policy, Workplace Language Policy and the Dress Code Policy, to name a few.
The Council also worked to include the national celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday on the UMMC holiday roster and established diversity goals in the Annual Operating Plan and Strategic Plan. In addition, the Diversity Facilitator Group has provided cultural education and resources to thousands of Medical Center employees. From an economic development perspective, the Corporate Contracts and Procurement Department worked with the Diversity Council and used cultural competence to establish best practices for our Diversity Supplier Program.
