HCU is a non-medical psychiatric rehabilitation and residential rehabilitation program for persons with severe mental illness. The core principle to rehabilitation stems from the recovery model where staff partner with clients to facilitate identification of strengths, goals and potential for growth. Work focuses on helping the individual manage their illness and move forward with their life. Establishing an identity other than having a mental illness is critical to the success of rehabilitation. Frequently identified goals include obtaining a GED (classes available on site), employment and independent living.
The psychiatric rehabilitation program offers a community atmosphere for individuals to reach their goals through a variety of skills teaching and social /recreational opportunities. The average daily attendance is over 100. Services are offered either on site or off site.
Staff assists individuals in their homes or any other community location appropriate for their needs. Services include assistance, skill teaching, and support in maintaining a home, budgeting, medication monitoring, travel training, using community services, etc.
The residential program consists of 51 beds in 19 homes with varying levels of staff support. Included is a six person transitional young adult program for individuals 16-21 year old men, who may be returning from out of state placements. The goal of the residential program is to assist individuals to live in the community by providing a supportive home-like environment. Advancement to independent living is a common goal for most clients.
Employment Services offer vocational assessments, job development, a job club,
job placement, job coaching, and extended support. The program tries to minimize
the time between a member requesting a job and job placement. Staff members
work with the Department of Rehabilitative Services (DORS) to ensure that individuals
receive any services for which they may be eligible.
