Addiction is a complex disease of the brain that is often paired with mental health conditions, substance abuse and health issues. At the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), we treat a variety of addictions that might include the use of heroin, alcohol and opioids.

At UMMC's Downtown and Midtown Campuses, we have multiple addiction treatment programs to fit individuals' needs, and our programs work together to expedite the treatment process.

That means we can manage your treatment plan by directing you to the best programs, available resources, benefits options and more.

We accept referrals from hospitals, health care providers, parole and probation staff, social workers and case managers, as well as self-referrals.

During the coronavirus pandemic we have added resources to our website to help you navigate the difficulty of this time, including information on harm reductions, virtual meetings food and employment.

Addiction Treatment Locations

Our team is a national leader in telemedicine to treat individuals with opioid use disorders. We use video conferencing equipment to deliver buprenorphine, a medication to treat opioid use, to individuals in rural areas.

Substance Abuse Treatment Services

We offer intensive outpatient services for alcohol dependency and drug addictions. Individuals will visit us and we will work to gradually reduce your level of care and help you maintain independence. Our plans include drug-free programs as well as medication-assisted treatments (MAT). We provide:

  • Screenings and assessments
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Discharge plans
  • Case management and referral assistance

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Our medication-assisted treatment program treats withdrawal and suppresses cravings for those recovering from alcohol, heroin and prescription opioid addictions. We use Suboxone (buprenorphine), Methadone and Vivitrol (naltrexone).

Our methadone treatment program was the first hospital-based initiative in the state of Maryland, dating all the way back to the 1970s. More than 500 patients are currently receiving treatment.

Substance Abuse Counseling and Mental Health Services

Our doctors and team provide:

  • Relapse prevention and recovery plans
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Workforce and community development services

We offer medical as well as individual and group counseling within each program. Our team includes:

  • Board-certified addiction psychiatrists
  • Addiction counselors
  • Peer recovery specialists
  • Social workers

Drug and Alcohol Detoxification

Our addiction specialists coordinate detoxification for chemical dependency, partnering with treatment teams at the University of Maryland Medical Center's Midtown campuses.

For individuals with opiate addictions, we also provide an on-site location to help stabilize you on medication-assisted treatments, including methadone.

Peer recovery coaches are also an important part of the team. Our coaches encourage individuals to engage in treatment and offer referrals to resources, as well as a shoulder to lean on during the process.

The Overdose Survivor Outreach Program (OSOP) links overdose survivors to care and provides training for the use of naloxone to prevent overdoses.

Deaf Addiction Services at Maryland (DASAM)

With more than 17 years of experience, we are able to provide onsite and state-wide services to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals who need treatment for alcohol and drug addictions.

Our staff members are fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). This program is located at the UM Addiction Treatment Center.

Our team also offers case management services, including:
