Education and Self Care Programs

Comprehensive Diabetes Management

Lifelong wellness begins with a solid understanding of diabetes and how it affects you. Diabetes is a chronic condition that requires you to make multiple decisions throughout the day to successfully manage blood sugars and prevent diabetes related health problems. Learning self-management skills is an important part of your diabetes care. At the Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, your educational needs may be met individually or in small groups. You will learn about nutrition, blood sugar monitoring, medications, complications, exercise, foot care, management of high and low blood sugar, and similar issues. Diabetes self-management education will leave you with essential skills and a better awareness of the many resources available to you. All of our educational programs are provided by certified diabetes educators. To request an appointment with a diabetes educator, please call 410-328-6584.

Diabetes Education Classes

In small groups of 3-6 people, you'll learn what to eat, how your medicine works, how to check blood sugar, what to do for high or low sugars, and how to take care of your feet, among other things. Diabetes education classes are the best way for you to ensure you have the skills for self-managing diabetes. Learn more

Support Group

Living with diabetes isn't easy. This support group was established to give you a place where you can meet and talk with others who face the same daily challenges you do. You'll find a positive, caring environment where you can share your concerns, learn new management approaches, and help others benefit from your own life experiences. Discussions are led by diabetes educators and a variety of guest speakers.

No reservation required. Open to the public and free of charge. Click here to see schedule of topics and speakers. For more information, call 410-328-6584 and ask for Kathleen Arkangel.

Pregnancy Class

Diabetes can make pregnancy a challenging time.  Whether you had diabetes before your pregnancy, or developed it during pregnancy, this class will help you successfully manage your blood sugar. Offered in small groups of 2-4 women, you'll receive the most current guidelines for blood sugar monitoring, diet, weight gain, and exercise for pregnancy. Classes are offered weekly.

Insulin Pump Program

Insulin pumps offer a different method of taking insulin, with a continuous infusion of insulin being delivered 24 hours a day. Many find this method to improve their quality of life and offer them more flexibility with eating than ever before. If your medical provider thinks this treatment is right for you, our program will prepare you to safely transition to insulin pump therapy. This program consists of 3-4 classes focused on intensive diabetes management, including carbohydrate counting. Classes are offered monthly. *Note: To start an insulin pump, you must also be seen by a physician at UMCDE.
