Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Fellowship Program

Facilities

imaging unit

The University of Maryland Medical System/Hospital is an 800-bed facility with a large outpatient department. The Medical Center cares for more than 32,000 inpatients and 300,000 outpatients each year. One unique aspect of the hospital is the Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services System, which serves the entire state of Maryland, includes a 140-bed critical care unit, and houses one of the world’s most advanced technological support systems for trauma management and care.

The equipment of the department consists of standard as well as sophisticated and specialized radiographic units, including:

The sonography section has 6 state-of-the-art scanning units, and the Nuclear Medicine Division is well equipped with 6 state-of-the-art SPECT cameras and a 16-slice PET/CT unit. The department has expanded into a new inpatient facility and deployed a sophisticated hospital-wide picture archiving and communication system (PACS) with computed radiology. The new Breast Center, which opened in fall 2007, offers the most advanced techniques for diagnosis, from the latest in digital mammography to breast MR imaging procedures. The VA Maryland Health Care System, Baltimore Division, is an integral part of the program. This state-of-the-art 324-bed VA Hospital, which opened in January 1993, adjoins the University of Maryland Hospital. The VA Diagnostic Imaging Department is a national leader in all-digital imaging, with advanced technologies, including multislice CT, 1.5T MR, PET, and a full array of nuclear medicine cameras. All University of Maryland resident and fellowship programs are fully integrated with the Baltimore VA. Fellows usually spend 1 month of every 4 at the VA.

Several regional outpatient imaging centers also provide a wide spectrum of case material. Extensive teaching files include the ACR Learning Materials and a large image library supervised by a departmental librarian. Several full-time academic secretaries and a research administrator support the faculty, fellows, and residents in the production of grant applications and publications. More than 2,000 SF of dedicated and well-equipped basic research space, including new small animal imaging instrumentation, are assigned to this department on the medical school campus. Additional space and equipment are devoted to resident research and education activities.

More than 600,000 imaging examinations are performed by department staff each year: ~300,000 at UMMC; 80,000 at the VA, and 220,000 at affiliate facilities, including the University Imaging Center at Paca Redwood, Kernan Hospital, Shipley's Choice Outpatient Radiology, and Maryland General Hospital. Of the procedures performed at UMMC, approximately 16,000 are angiographic and/or interventional procedures, 83,000 are CT exams, and 14,000 are MR exams. The Nuclear Medicine Division of the Department performs more than 13,000 scans per year, and approximately 13,000 ultrasound procedures are performed annually.
