The Digestive Health Center offers a highly specialized, patient-centered approach to the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. The Digestive Health Center provides the highest level of comprehensive services for both adults and children --- including the latest medical and surgical treatment options -- as well as innovations in screening and diagnostic technologies.

Our physicians are pioneers in their fields of expertise and have innovated many new treatment options, such as the CryoSpray ablation procedure to treat Barrett's esophagus.

Our physicians also train future physician leaders, who will be on the forefront of GI disease management in their respective areas of specialty. We will continue our research endeavors to advance the practice of our center and the industry.

As part of its Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has recently acknowledged the endoscopy unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center for its adherence to ASGE safety guidelines and commitment to quality assurance in endoscopy. The Medical Center's endoscopy unit was one of 33 units in the United States to be honored with this distinction.

The UMMC endoscopy unit received this honor upon providing evidence of a recent and successful accreditation by a recognized accrediting body and completing an educational course which reviewed guidelines regarding quality endoscopic care.

The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that follow the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscopy reprocessing and CDC infection control guidelines.
