Biography:Dr. Cowan recently joined the University of Maryland after completing his fellowship
and research training at the National Institutes of Health. His clinical and
teaching interests have continued to focus on critical care medicine, and especially
on the management of sepsis/septic shock and ARDS.
Dr. Cowan has been setting up a bench laboratory at the University of Maryland
to continue and extend his investigations on the role of eicosanoids in airway
inflammation, and will have extensive collaborations with other university departments
including physiology, surgery and pharmacology. He expects to be fully and independently
funded within the next few years.
Dr. Cowan has been intimately involved in organizing and contributing to two
new courses being developed within the division of pulmonary and critical care
medicine. One is a basic physiology course aimed at clinical fellows, while
the other is an overview of laboratory research, intended for the fellows entering
their research years.
