Special considerations:

Factors that interfere with bilirubin testing are:

  • Hemolysis (breakdown) of blood will falsely increase bilirubin levels
  • Lipids in the blood will falsely decrease bilirubin levels
  • Bilirubin is light-sensitive; it breaks down in light
