Aortic angiography - Risks

What the risks are:

Risks of aortic angiography include:

  • Allergic reaction to the contrast dye
  • Arrhythmias
  • Bleeding
  • Blockage of the artery
  • Bruising at the site of catheter insertion
  • Cardiac tamponade
  • Embolism from a blood clot forming at the tip of the catheter
  • Heart attack
  • Infection
  • Injury to the artery
  • Low blood pressure
  • Stroke

Special considerations:

This procedure may be combined with left heart catheterization.

Aortic angiography has been mostly replaced by computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) angiography.
