Laryngology – Voice, Swallowing, Airway

Laryngology comprises the study and treatment of diseases and disorders that affect the larynx (voice box). The larynx regulates the intersection of the respiratory and digestive tracts thereby controlling vocal production, swallowing and breathing.

The mission of the University of Maryland Laryngology team is to provide expert clinical patient care as well as leadership in education and research. The team consists of attending and resident physicians, physician assistants, administrative assistants, nurses, speech language pathologists, and vocal pedagoges who work in close collaboration with our neurology, thoracic and cardiac surgery, pulmonary, foregut surgery, endocrinology, neurosurgery, pediatrics, rheumatology and gastroenterology departments and divisions.

In recent years, there has been a rapid growth in technology for laryngeal imaging and natural orifice endoscopic surgical techniques. These advances allow accurate examination and diagnosis of the laryngeal structure and function. We then apply our multidisciplinary approach—diagnosis, medical therapy, then if necessary surgical therapy—to both the office setting and operating room.

State-of-the art techniques include highly specialized microinstrumentation, laser surgery, and radiofrequency and microdebrider tissue ablation. In addition, we investigate novel drug therapies and delivery systems.
