Hipotermia
Definición:
Es el descenso peligroso de la temperatura corporal, por debajo de 35º C (95º Fahrenheit).
Nombres alternativos:
Exposición al frÃo; temperatura corporal baja
Consideraciones generales:
Entre las personas con mayores probabilidades de experimentar hipotermia se incluye a aquellos con las siguientes condiciones:
- Muy ancianas o muy jóvenes
- Enfermos crónicos, especialmente quienes sufren de problemas circulatorios o cardÃacos
- Desnutridas
- Excesivamente cansadas
- Bajo los efectos del alcohol o las drogas
Causas:
La hipotermia ocurre cuando el cuerpo pierde más calor del que puede generar y generalmente es causada por una prolongada exposición al frÃo.
Las causas más comunes son:
- Permanecer al aire libre durante el invierno sin protegerse con la suficiente ropa adecuada.
- Caer de una embarcación en aguas frÃas.
- Usar ropas húmedas por mucho tiempo cuando hay viento o hace mucho frÃo.
- Hacer esfuerzos agotadores o ingerir alimentos o bebidas en cantidades insuficientes en climas frÃos, incluso en temperaturas por encima del punto de congelación.
