El médico llevará a cabo un examen físico y hará preguntas acerca de la historia clínica de la persona.

Los pacientes con fibrosis pulmonar idiopática presentan sonidos respiratorios anormales denominados crepitaciones y los pacientes con enfermedad avanzada pueden presentar coloración azulada alrededor de la boca o en las uñas debido a la insuficiencia de oxígeno ( cianosis ).

El examen de los dedos de los pies y de las manos puede revelar dedos en palillo de tambor (agrandamiento anormal de las yemas de los dedos).
