Definición:

Es una inflamación (irritación e hinchazón) de los pulmones debido a una infección con un virus.

La neumonía viral es más probable que se presente en niños pequeños y adultos mayores, debido a que sus cuerpos tienen más dificultad para combatir el virus.

La neumonía viral casi siempre es causada por uno de varios virus:

Adenovirus
Influenza
Parainfluenza
Virus sincicial respiratorio

Las personas que se encuentran en mayor riesgo de contraer una neumonía viral más seria a menudo tienen un sistema inmunitario debilitado e incluyen:

Pacientes adultos con VIH/SIDA
Bebés que nacen muy prematuros
Niños con problemas cardíacos y pulmonares
Personas que reciben quimioterapia para el cáncer u otros medicamentos que debilitan el sistema inmunitario
Receptores de trasplante de órganos
