Tratamiento:

Se pueden administrar antibióticos si la persona tiene una infección. Frecuentemente, los pacientes con mediastinitis se deben someter a cirugía para desbridar (extirpar) el área de la inflamación.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La recuperación de la persona depende de la causa de la mediastinitis. Los pacientes que la sufren después de someterse a una cirugía abierta de tórax tienen un riesgo significativo de muerte como resultado de esta afección.

Complicaciones:

Entre las complicaciones se pueden mencionar:

• Diseminación de la infección a:
  • corazón
  • vasos sanguíneos
  • pulmones
  • huesos
  • torrente sanguíneo
• Cicatrización

La cicatrización puede ser grave, especialmente cuando es causada por la mediastinitis crónica y puede interferir con la función pulmonar o cardíaca.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si el paciente ha tenido una cirugía abierta de tórax y presenta dolores en el pecho, fiebre, escalofríos, dificultad para respirar o drenaje de una herida.

Si la persona sufre de tuberculosis o sarcoidosis y presenta cualquiera de estos síntomas, debe buscar asistencia médica inmediata.
