Tratamiento:

A menudo, no se requiere ningún tratamiento, ya que el aire es absorbido gradualmente desde el mediastino. Si el neumomediastino está acompañado de neumotórax, se puede colocar una sonda pleural. Respirar altas concentraciones de oxígeno le puede permitir al aire en el mediastino ser absorbido más rápidamente.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

El pronóstico depende de la enfermedad o eventos que ocasionaron el neumomediastino.

Complicaciones:

En casos excepcionales, se puede acumular demasiado aire en el mediastino de tal manera que las venas se comprimen, llevando a que se presente presión sanguínea baja.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica de emergencia o llamar al número de emergencia local (como el 911) si se tiene un fuerte dolor en el pecho o dificultad para respirar.
