Definición:

Es una acumulación de líquido entre las capas de la membrana que recubre los pulmones y la cavidad torácica.

El cuerpo produce líquido pleural en pequeñas cantidades para lubricar las superficies de la pleura, la membrana delgada que recubre la cavidad torácica y rodea los pulmones. Un derrame pleural es una acumulación anormal de este líquido y se pueden presentar dos diferentes tipos de esta afección:
