Acidosis respiratoria

Definición:

La acidosis respiratoria es una condición que ocurre cuando los pulmones no pueden eliminar todo el dióxido de carbono producido por el cuerpo. Esto crea un trastorno del equilibrio ácido-básico del cuerpo, en el cual los fluidos corporales se vuelven excesivamente ácidos.

Nombres alternativos:

Acidosis respiratoria; insuficiencia respiratoria; insuficiencia ventilatoria

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La acidosis respiratoria puede resultar de enfermedades pulmonares tales como la enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) y el asma severo.

Otras condiciones que pueden llevar a la acidosis respiratoria abarcan:

• Síndrome de hipoventilación por obesidad
• Fatiga excesiva o debilidad de los músculos de la caja torácica
• Deformidades graves de la columna y la caja torácica, como por ejemplo escoliosis  severa

La acidosis respiratoria crónica ocurre durante un tiempo prolongado, lo que lleva a una situación estable. Esto se debe a que los riñones incrementan los químicos que ayudan a restaurar el equilibrio ácido-básico en el cuerpo.

La acidosis respiratoria es una condición grave en la cual el dióxido de carbono se acumula muy rápidamente.
