Coccidioidomicosis pulmonar aguda - Overview

Definición:

Es una infección pulmonar causada por la inhalación de las esporas del Coccidioides immitis o Coccidioides posadasii, hongos que se encuentran en los suelos de ciertas partes del sudoeste de los Estados Unidos, México, Centro y Suramérica.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La infección por coccidioides comienza en los pulmones después de que una persona inhala las esporas.

Las personas que pueden presentar una afección más seria abarcan:

Personas de ascendencia africana o filipina
Personas con sistemas inmunitarios débiles debido a SIDA, diabetes o medicamentos inmunodepresores

Ocasionalmente, la infección puede transformarse en una enfermedad pulmonar prolongada (crónica) o se puede reactivar después de un período latente prolongado.

El hecho de viajar a un área donde se encuentran estos hongos es un factor de riesgo para contraer la infección. Las áreas en los Estados Unidos abarcan Arizona, California (especialmente el Valle de San Joaquín) y el oeste de Texas.
