Definición:

Es una infección micótica que se presenta después de inhalar las esporas del hongo Histoplasma capsulatum.

La histoplasmosis es causada por un hongo que se encuentra en el centro y oriente de los Estados Unidos (valles de los ríos Mississipi y Ohio), oriente del Canadá, México, América Central, América del Sur, África y sureste de Asia.

La mayoría de los casos son leves o asintomáticos. La histoplasmosis pulmonar aguda puede ocurrir en epidemias después de una fuerte exposición. También se puede presentar la enfermedad crónica y progresiva o propagada (diseminada). En la enfermedad diseminada, la infección se ha propagado desde los pulmones a otros órganos a través del torrente sanguíneo.

El hígado y el bazo generalmente aumentan de tamaño y todos los órganos del cuerpo pueden estar comprometidos. Además, pueden ocurrir ulceraciones en la boca y en el tracto gastrointestinal. Los factores de riesgo son viajar o residir en la zona central u oriental de los Estados Unidos y la exposición a los excrementos de pájaros y murciélagos.
