Mesotelioma maligno - Overview

Mesotelioma de tipo maligno

Definición:

Es un tumor canceroso poco común del revestimiento del pulmón y de la cavidad torácica (pleura) o del revestimiento del abdomen (peritoneo) que típicamente se debe a la exposición prolongada a los asbestos.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La exposición prolongada al asbesto, un material resistente al fuego, es el mayor factor de riesgo. El asbesto solía encontrarse comúnmente en vinilos para techos, cielos rasos y aislamiento, cemento y materiales de frenos de automóviles. Aunque muchos trabajadores del asbesto fumaban, los expertos no creen que el tabaquismo en sí sea una causa de esta enfermedad.

El mesotelioma maligno afecta con más frecuencia a los hombres que a las mujeres y la edad promedio del diagnóstico es a los 60 años.
