Empiema

Tratamiento:

El propósito del tratamiento es extraer la acumulación de pus del pulmón y curar la infección, para lo cual se prescriben antibióticos que controlen esta última. El médico coloca una sonda pleural para drenar completamente el pus y puede ser necesario que un cirujano lleve a cabo un procedimiento para despegar el revestimiento del pulmón (decorticación) si éste no se expande adecuadamente.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Generalmente, el empiema no produce un daño pulmonar permanente.

Complicaciones:

Una posible complicación es el engrosamiento de la pleura.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se presentan síntomas de empiema.
