La enfermedad ocurre principalmente en personas que trabajan con chorreadoras de arena, minerÃa, canterÃa, esmerilado y aquellos que trabajan en fundiciones. La silicosis se está volviendo menos común debido a las regulaciones establecidas por la Administración de Salud y Seguridad Ocupacional ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA) de los Estados Unidos que exigen el uso de equipo protector.
