Insuficiencia cardÃaca
Definición:
La insuficiencia cardÃaca, también denominada insuficiencia cardÃaca congestiva, es una afección potencialmente mortal en la cual el corazón ya no puede bombear suficiente sangre al resto del cuerpo.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La insuficiencia cardÃaca casi siempre es una afección crónica y duradera, aunque algunas veces se puede desarrollar súbitamente. Dicha afección puede afectar el lado derecho, el lado izquierdo o ambos lados del corazón.
A medida que se pierde la acción de bombeo del corazón, la sangre se puede represar en otras partes del cuerpo como:
- El hÃgado
- El tracto gastrointestinal y las extremidades ( insuficiencia cardÃaca derecha )
- Los pulmones ( insuficiencia cardÃaca izquierda )
Muchos órganos no reciben suficiente oxÃgeno y nutrientes cuando se presenta insuficiencia cardÃaca, lo cual ocasiona daño y reduce su capacidad de funcionar adecuadamente. Cuando ambos lados del corazón presentan la insuficiencia, la mayorÃa de las áreas del cuerpo pueden resultar afectadas.
Las causas más comunes de insuficiencia cardÃaca son hipertensión (presión sanguÃnea alta) y arteriopatÃa coronaria (por ejemplo, la persona ha tenido un ataque cardÃaco). Otras causas funcionales o estructurales de la insuficiencia cardÃaca son las siguientes:
- ValvulopatÃa del corazón
- CardiopatÃa congénita
- MiocardiopatÃa dilatada
- Enfermedad pulmonar
- Tumor cardÃaco
La insuficiencia cardÃaca se vuelve más común con el aumento de la edad. De la misma manera, se está en mayor riesgo de sufrirla si la persona tiene sobrepeso, diabetes, si es fumadora, consume alcohol o cocaÃna.
