Los siguientes cambios en el estilo de vida pueden ayudar a prevenir la ateroesclerosis:

Se recomienda trabajar con el médico para bajar la presión arterial a un rango normal, lo cual puede requerir el uso de medicamentos. Asimismo, se deben seguir las recomendaciones del médico en cuanto a tratamiento y control de la diabetes y otras enfermedades.

No se deben tomar terapias de reemplazo hormonal, suplementos de ácido fólico, vitamina C o E, o antioxidantes para disminuir el riesgo de cardiopatía o accidente cerebrovascular, dado que no se ha demostrado que estos métodos prevengan estas enfermedades.
