Prevención:

El prolapso de la válvula mitral generalmente no se puede prevenir, pero sí algunas de sus complicaciones. La persona debe comunicarle a los médicos, incluyendo el odontólogo, cualquier antecedente de cardiopatía o problemas en las válvulas del corazón.

Con frecuencia, se utilizan antibióticos para prevenir infección, en lugar de tener que usarlos después de que se presente una, lo que se denomina tratamiento profiláctico. Si la persona tiene prolapso de la válvula mitral con un válvula que presenta escape, se administran antibióticos antes de un arreglo dental u otras cirugías para impedir que las bacterias lleguen a la sangre y causen infecciones peligrosas. Algunos médicos recomiendan los antibióticos si se presenta un prolapso de la válvula mitral que va de moderado a severo y cuando se escucha un "clic" (soplo) con un estetoscopio.
