Pericarditis - Overview

Definición:

Es una afección en la cual la cubierta similar a un saco alrededor del corazón (pericardio) resulta inflamada.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La pericarditis generalmente es una complicación de infecciones virales, más comúnmente por ecovirus o virus de Coxsackie y, con menos frecuencia, causada por influenza o infección por VIH.

Las infecciones con bacterias pueden conducir a pericarditis (también llamada pericarditis purulenta). Algunas infecciones micóticas también pueden producir pericarditis.

Con frecuencia, se desconoce la causa de la pericarditis, en cuyo caso recibe el nombre de pericarditis idiopática.

La pericarditis afecta con más frecuencia a los hombres entre los 20 y 50 años de edad y generalmente sigue a infecciones respiratorias. En los niños, es causada con mayor frecuencia por el adenovirus o virus de Coxsackie.
