Definición:

Es un estrechamiento de parte de la aorta (la mayor arteria que lleva al corazón) y es un tipo de defecto congénito. Coartación significa estrechamiento.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La aorta lleva sangre desde el corazón a los vasos sanguíneos que irrigan el cuerpo con sangre y nutrientes y, si parte de esta arteria se estrecha, es difícil que la sangre pueda pasar a través de ella. Las personas con esta afección a menudo tienen presión sanguínea alta en la parte superior del cuerpo y los brazos (o en un brazo) y presión sanguínea baja en la parte inferior del cuerpo y las piernas.

La coartación aórtica es más común en personas con ciertos trastornos genéticos, como el síndrome de Turner. Sin embargo, esta afección también puede deberse a defectos congénitos en la válvula aórtica, tales como la válvula aórtica bicúspide.

Este trastorno se presenta aproximadamente en 1 de cada 10.000 personas y suele ser diagnosticado en niños o adultos menores de 40 años.
