Es la presión arterial alta debido al estrechamiento de las arterias que llevan la sangre a los riñones y es una forma de hipertensión secundaria.

Cuando las arterias renales se estrechan, fluye menos sangre hacia los riñones. Los riñones responden de manera errónea como si la presión arterial del paciente estuviera baja y liberan hormonas que le ordenan al cuerpo retener sal y agua, lo cual causa un aumento en la presión arterial.
Muchas enfermedades diferentes pueden causar estrechamiento de las arterias renales, siendo la estenosis de la arteria renal una de las más comunes.
