Tratamiento:

No siempre se necesita un tratamiento y depende de la causa subyacente de la hepatitis. Se debe revisar cada caso para determinar si el tratamiento sería provechoso. Las nuevas terapias para las infecciones virales crónicas ahora pueden detener o neutralizar algún daño hepático causado por ciertos virus.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

La mayoría de las personas se recuperan de los síntomas de la hepatitis crónica; sin embargo, si la condición es causada por un virus, como el VHC que puede ocasionar daño hepático progresivo, la hepatitis puede empeorar y provocar cicatrización hepática severa, insuficiencia hepática y potencialmente la muerte.

Complicaciones:

La progresión hacia una insuficiencia hepática no es común con muchas causas de hepatitis crónica. Sin embargo, las personas con hepatitis viral o sistemas inmunes deprimidos, incluyendo aquellos con VIH, están en mayor riesgo.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se debe acudir al médico si los síntomas de hepatitis empeoran o persisten.
