Síntomas:

La diarrea líquida y súbita en un individuo que presente estreñimiento crónico generalmente es indicio de una retención fecal. Otros síntomas abarcan una tensión frecuente con el paso de heces líquidas o heces pequeñas y semiformadas, así como cólicos y malestar abdominales.

Signos y exámenes:

El médico realiza un examen del área estomacal y del recto. El examen rectal revela una masa dura de heces secas dentro del recto.

En caso de haberse presentado un cambio reciente en las deposiciones, el médico puede recomendar una colonoscopia con el fin de hacer una evaluación en búsqueda de cáncer de colon o cáncer rectal.
