Definición:

Es un orificio que atraviesa toda la pared del estómago, el intestino delgado o el intestino grueso y es una situación de emergencia médica.

La perforación gastrointestinal puede ser causada por una gama de enfermedades, incluyendo apendicittis, diverticulitis, enfermedad ulcerativa, enfermedad de Crohn y, con menor frecuencia, infecciones del intestino como la colitis infecciosa.

La perforación del intestino conduce a la fuga o filtración de los contenidos intestinales hacia la cavidad abdominal, ocasionando una inflamación llamada peritonitis .
