Megacolon tóxico

Definición:

Es una complicación potencialmente mortal de otras afecciones intestinales y se caracteriza por un colon muy dilatado, distensión abdominal y algunas veces fiebre, dolor abdominal o shock .

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

Esta condición es una complicación de una enfermedad intestinal inflamatoria, como la colitis ulcerativa y la enfermedad de Crohn, y algunas infecciones del colon. Existen otras formas de megacolon y pueden ser congénitas (presentes al nacer) o asociadas con algunas formas de estreñimiento.
