Cirrosis
Definición:
Es el resultado de una enfermedad hepática crónica que causa disfunción y cicatrización del hÃgado. Esto con frecuencia ocasiona muchas complicaciones, entre las que se pueden mencionar: acumulación de lÃquido en el abdomen ( ascitis ), trastornos de sangrado ( coagulopatÃa ), aumento en la presión de los vasos sanguÃneos del hÃgado ( hipertensión portal) y confusión o cambio en el nivel de conciencia ( encefalopatÃa hepática ).

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La cirrosis es ocasionada por la enfermedad hepática crónica. El alcoholismo prolongado y la infección por hepatitis C son algunas de las causas comunes de la enfermedad hepática crónica en los Estados Unidos (ver enfermedad hepática alcohólica ). Otras causas de cirrosis pueden ser: hepatitis B, medicamentos, inflamación autoinmunitaria del hÃgado, trastornos en el sistema de drenaje del hÃgado (el sistema biliar) y trastornos metabólicos de hierro y cobre (hemocromatosis y enfermedad de Wilson).
