Los desgarros de Mallory-Weiss generalmente son causados por accesos fuertes o prolongados de vómito o tos , y también pueden ser causados por convulsiones epilépticas.

Los desgarros pueden estar seguidos por un vómito de sangre de color rojo brillante o presencia de sangre en las heces y cualquier afección que lleve a que se presenten ataques violentos y prolongados de tos o vómitos puede causarlos.

La incidencia de esta afección es de 4 casos por cada 100.000 personas.
