El bloqueo e infección causados por cálculos en las vías biliares pueden ser potencialmente mortales. Sin embargo, el pronóstico generalmente es muy bueno con un diagnóstico y tratamiento oportunos.
Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se presenta dolor abdominal, con o sin fiebre, que no sea atribuible a otras causas, si se presenta ictericia o si se desarrollan otros síntomas que sugieran la presencia de coledocolitiasis.
