Prevención:

Se debe evitar el contacto con la sangre o los hemoderivados siempre que sea posible. El personal de salud debe tomar las precauciones universales al manipular sangre y líquidos corporales.

Se recomienda no inyectarse drogas alucinógenas y, en especial, no compartir agujas con otra persona, así como tener precaución al hacerse tatuajes y perforaciones corporales ( piercing ).

La transmisión sexual es baja entre parejas monógamas estables. El compañero sexual debe ser examinado para hepatitis C; en caso de ser negativo, las recomendaciones actuales son no cambiar las prácticas sexuales. Los individuos que tienen sexo fuera de una relación monógama deben practicar comportamientos sexuales más seguros para evitar el contagio de la hepatitis C, así como enfermedades de transmisión sexual, incluyendo el VIH y la hepatitis B.

Actualmente, no hay una vacuna para la hepatitis C.
