Colangitis esclerosante primaria

Definición:

Es una hinchazón (inflamación) de las vías biliares del hígado sin una causa conocida.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

En esta afección, las vías biliares dentro y fuera del hígado se estrechan y cicatrizan. La causa de esto se desconoce.

La enfermedad está asociada con enfermedad intestinal inflamatoria (enfermedad de Crohn y colitis ulcerativa), e igualmente los factores genéticos pueden ser responsables. La colangitis esclerosante ocurre con mayor frecuencia en hombres que en mujeres y es rara en niños.
