El tratamiento de los trastornos hepáticos puede prevenir algunos casos de encefalopatía hepática. Muchos de estos trastornos se pueden prevenir evitando el consumo excesivo de alcohol y el uso de drogas intravenosas.

Si hay síntomas neurológicos en una persona con enfermedad hepática diagnosticada o presunta, se debe buscar atención médica inmediatamente.
