La anemia (conteo bajo de glóbulos rojos) y, en casos severos, niveles bajos de glóbulos blancos y plaquetas son complicaciones. En la anemia por deficiencia de folato, los glóbulos rojos son anormalmente grandes.
El ácido fólico también se necesita para el desarrollo de un feto saludable y juega un papel importante en el desarrollo de la médula espinal y el cerebro de éste. La deficiencia de ácido fólico puede causar anomalías congénitas graves del cerebro y la médula espinal, conocidos como defectos del tubo neural.
