Prevención:

Si usted tiene diabetes, siga las recomendaciones del médico con relación a la dieta, los medicamentos y el ejercicio.

Prevenir el nivel bajo de azúcar en la sangre es mejor que tener que tratarlo. Cuando haga ejercicio, revise sus niveles de azúcar en la sangre. Asegúrese de tener refrigerios consigo si toma insulina u otros medicamentos que bajan el azúcar en la sangre.

Pregúntele al médico o a la enfermera si necesita un refrigerio a la hora de acostarse para prevenir el azúcar bajo en la sangre durante la noche. Los refrigerios de proteínas pueden ser los mejores.

No beba alcohol sin ingerir alimento; pero si en verdad lo hace, tome sólo uno o dos tragos a lo sumo.

El médico puede pedirle que cambie su dieta, de manera que reciba más cantidades iguales de azúcar en el cuerpo a lo largo del día. Es posible que le soliciten consumir comidas pequeñas y frecuentes con carbohidratos complejos, fibra y grasa, y evitar los azúcares simples, el alcohol y los jugos de fruta.

Consuma las comidas a intervalos regulares. Ingiera alimento adicional cuando haga más ejercicio.

Si tiene antecedentes de hipoglucemia, mantenga un bocadillo o bebida que contenga azúcar disponible en todo momento e ingiéralo tan pronto como aparezcan síntomas.
