Tratamiento:

Generalmente, el tratamiento consiste en la reposición de los nutrientes que faltan, tratar los síntomas en la medida de lo necesario y cualquier condición médica subyacente.

Expectativas (pronóstico):

El pronóstico depende de la causa de la desnutrición. La mayoría de las deficiencias nutricionales se pueden corregir; sin embargo, si la causa es una condición médica, hay que tratar dicha condición con el fin de contrarrestar la deficiencia nutricional.

Complicaciones:

Si la desnutrición no se trata, puede ocasionar discapacidad mental y física, enfermedades y posiblemente la muerte.

Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:

Se recomienda discutir con el médico el riesgo de presentar desnutrición. Sin embargo, se debe buscar tratamiento si se experimenta cualquier cambio importante en el funcionamiento corporal. Los síntomas son, entre otros: desmayos, ausencia de la menstruación, deficiencia de crecimiento en los niños, caída rápida del cabello.
