Artritis séptica
Definición:
Es una inflamación de una articulación , ocasionada por una infección bacteriana diferente a la gonorrea.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La artritis séptica se desarrolla cuando las bacterias se propagan a través del torrente sanguÃneo a una articulación o cuando la articulación se infecta directamente con bacterias durante una lesión o cirugÃa.
La artritis séptica aguda tiende a ser causada por organismos tales como estafilococos, Streptococcus pneumoniae y estreptococos del grupo B; mientras que la artritis séptica crónica (que ocurre con menos frecuencia) es causada por organismos tales como Mycobacterium tuberculosis y Candida albicans . Las articulaciones más comúnmente infectadas son la rodilla y la cadera.
Los siguientes factores incrementan el riesgo de padecer artritis séptica:
- Implantes de articulaciones artificiales
- Infección bacteriana
- Padecimiento o enfermedad crónica
- Consumo de drogas por vÃa intravenosa
- Medicamentos que inhiben el sistema inmunitario
- Traumatismo reciente en una articulación
- Artroscopia reciente u otra cirugÃa en una articulación
- Artritis reumatoidea
- Enfermedad drepanocÃtica
La artritis séptica se puede observar a cualquier edad. En los niños, ocurre con mayor frecuencia en aquellos menores de 3 años de edad. La cadera es el lugar de infección más común en los bebés.
La artritis séptica no es común desde los 3 años de edad hasta la adolescencia. Los niños con artritis séptica tienen mayor probabilidad que los adultos de infectarse con estreptococos del grupo B y Haemophilus influenza .
