Lupus eritematoso sistémico - Overview

Definición:

Es un trastorno autoinmunitario crónico que puede afectar la piel, las articulaciones, los riñones, el cerebro y otros órganos.

Causas:

El lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) es una enfermedad autoinmunitaria, lo que significa que el sistema inmunitario del cuerpo ataca por error al tejido sano. Esto lleva a que se presente inflamación prolongada (crónica).

La causa subyacente de las enfermedades autoinmunitarias no se conoce completamente.

El lupus eritematoso sistémico puede ser leve o tan grave como para causar la muerte.

La enfermedad es mucho más común en mujeres que en hombres y puede presentarse a cualquier edad, pero aparece con mayor frecuencia en personas cuyas edades están comprendidas entre los 10 y 50 años. Las personas de raza negra y las asiáticas resultan afectadas con más frecuencia que las personas de otras razas.
